Three days later, I got the call from Beau that Georgia had just driven off with Cheyenne, and I rounded the corner and backed into my driveway. “Thanks for doing this, man.” We’d had everything planned out and had a few hours to get it all done since his wife had roped Cheyenne into doing a little shopping after lunch.

He pulled the tailgate opened and jerked his head. “Don’t mention it.”

I’d enlisted Georgia’s help in picking out a bedroom set since I had no clue what women liked, and Beau was going to help me carry it inside. Yesterday, I’d spent all night clearing out the second bedroom and moving my things to it.

Beau and I maneuvered the heavy boxes up the stairs, and even though I didn’t ask him to, he stayed and assembled it all with me. The doorbell rang, and I rushed downstairs to let the deliverymen in and led the way so they could set up the mattresses. “That reminds me…” Beau trailed off before he left the room.

He returned a few minutes later with a couple of overstuffed bags and dumped the contents on the floor.

Definitely not on the top of my list, but I was glad he thought of it. “Good thinking.”

“This was all Georgia. She figured you’d forget sheets and pillows, and even if you remembered, they probably wouldn’t match.”

I chuckled. “Yeah, the decorating part of it’s not really my thing, so tell her thanks. And let me know what I owe you.”

“If you think she or I will let you pay us for that, you’re insane. I can’t even imagine how much all this other stuff costs.”

“I just needed y’all to help distract her, not pay for any of this,” I protested.

“You wouldn’t let us help with any of the other shit. It’s just sheets and pillows, man. Let us at least do that.”

I didn’t have time to argue.

He put that stuff on the beds, and I broke down the boxes and took them to Beau’s truck, where he was going to drop all the trash off at the dump. When I returned, I dabbed my forehead and then put my hands on my hips, studying the room. It had a queen-sized bed along with a twin, loft-style bed that had a desk underneath with a furry pink chair. There was also a full-length dresser and a tall, vertical chest with matching white nightstands. The sheets were a mix of colored and black and white flowers, giving a girly but not too childish look. They were feminine, perfect for a mother and daughter. The pillows were fluffy, and the lamps were a really cool wood and glass design that somehow pulled everything together. “You think she’ll go for it?” I asked.

Beau clasped my shoulder. “I do. She’s not stupid, but she is proud, so you know she’ll fight you.”

“I know.”

“Can’t tell you how happy I am you’re doing this. Gigi’s been worried sick for months, and even before that she was upset about how sad her best friend was.
